i have office professional 2007. i have never got outlook 2007 to work. I am
trying again. I have tried reinstaling it. It just wont. The icon is there
but when I try yo open it I get the message - Cannot start Microsoft
Outlook. The command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are
using.

I have genuine office professional 2007.

How can I make it work because without it I can not run business contact
manager.

Initially try using the Office cd to repair the installation.
Assuming that is successfull, use the Mail Applet in the control panel to
create a new Profile (not copy) add a new data file & the accounts & test

Right-click the icon that you have been using to try to open Outlook,
and select Properties from the context menu.

In the Microsoft Office Outlook Properties window, find the "Target"
field, about 1/3 way down the"Shortcut" tab.

The target should point to the location of your OUTLOOK.EXE program.
Mine is listed as follows:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE" /recycle

Note that the quotes are required -- this is because of the spaces in
the location address.

The message that you are getting references an invalid command line
switch. In the text I copied above, my command line switch is /
recycle, which just means that if Outlook is already running, and I
click the icon again, it will just give me the existing window instead
of opening another instance of Outlook.

Note that the command line switch goes outside of the closing quote of
the location of the .exe file. There are lots of different switches
you can use when starting Outlook, but you need to make sure that you
don't have anything funky or mistyped in that area. Make sure there
are no trailing spaces at the end or anything misspelled. Maybe try
to remove any and all switches, leaving only the .exe location (in
quotes) and see if that works, then add back /recycle or whatever you
need once you have it working properly.

If this works, you may need to do this with other shortcuts as well,
as shortcuts in the Programs menu, desktop, quicklaunch, etc. may all
be configured in the faulty way.

Let us know if this helps!
