My PC locks when I try to use Word.

I'm currently running windows 98. When I try to run Word my pc locks and and
I get a message that says I'm running dangerously low on resources. My RAM
is running about 80% free. I can run excel, quicken, and other programs but
when I try to use word it just freezes.
