My Pictures folder error

Unable to insert a picture from "My Pictures" folder in any document. The contents of the folder are displayed briefly and then it locks up and displays "microsoft has encountered an error and needs to close..." Also unable to browse the "My Pictures" folder when trying to use a picture for the desktop. Same error occurs. Any ideas?
