my .pst file not compatible with this version pf personal folders

I had to format my PC, so I copied the 2 .pst files - outlook.pst and
archive.pst - on my pen drive in order not to lose my emails. After
installing outlook 2000, i tried in vain to load the .pst files. The
following error message pops up:

"The file e:\outlook\outlook.pst is not compatible with this version of the
personal folders information service. Contact your administrator.

These email are sooooo important, please help me open them.

Did you use Outlook 2000 before the format as well? Did you apply Service
Pack 3 + additional hotfixes already?
Did you configure Outlook in CW or IMO mode?
