My publisher won't publish to my website anymore

I have Pub.2007. When I first got it, I set it up and I could make my
changes and click publish and it would upload without FTP. Suddenly, it
wouldn't connect at all. I've been having to send my update files to my host
for him to upload. We've tried everything including an external FTP and it
will not load. My host can't figure it out either. As best we can figure,
we've made no changes that should cause it.

I read the thread about the PDF, but I don't think this applies. I did
purchase 2007 so it is not a Beta version or trial. I'm a medium Novice that
needs step by step, plain English usually.(Old and Slow. LOL).

Error Message: Cannot connect to FTP on this website. Change firewall
settings or FTP settings to access.

I tried to reset FTP and firewall, but couldn't make it work. Any
suggestions? I'll try anything once.

Hiya. I have just read your message and I think I have the same problem. I
have just built my first website and wanted to upload it to my domain name.
I am mega new to this and ended up tearing my hair out as I downloaded FTP (I
thought thats what I had to do) but it kept saying it wouldnt connect to my
server. it seemed reasonably straight forward in theory but in practice it
just wouldnt happen so I wonder whether it was an error rather than me being
useless?

Usually, this message means you are trying to connect using the wrong
username/password combo or FTP address.

When you signed up for web space, you should have received a detailed
e-mail that gives you instructions regarding what FTP address, username
and password you should use.

Given that you were originally able to upload your files, but suddenly
couldn't would suggest to me that you probably have your computer set to
automatically check for MSFT patches and changes, and that a recent patch or
"upgrade", changed the security settings on your computer. The error message
about the firewall suggests the same. Try disabling the firewall completely.
Disable your antivirus. If you downloaded and installed IE7, consider going
to Add and Remove and uninstalling it. It will roll back to IE6. And while
you are there look for recent "patches" to uninstall. What else if anything
have you installed or changed? In other words, look for what you changed on
your computer that changed the security settings such that you can no longer
upload.

With that said, were you using HTTP uploading protocol vs. FTP originally?
That could mean that the FPSE on your host have become corrupt and need to
be reinstalled. This can happen if you tried to use FTP. Here are three
articles about uploading that might give you more insight into your issue.
If you happen to figure it out, please post back so others will benefit.

I've tried resetting my firewall, virus scan and even turning it all off. I
have tried to use an FTP after it refused to publish. I don't have auto
patches for uploads settings, but I do use XP now. I've been trying to
remember if I bought the publisher before or after I changed computers and
went to XP. I've been trying to find an answer for this problem for several
months, but it seems like it did upload when I first got XP. My IE is v6.0.
I'm using the same virus and firewall that I have used for several years,
Avast. I don't know what FPSE is or how to reinstall and I'm sorry, but the
articles were apparently over my head. My host and I have tried everything
we could, but I still can't do my updates from Publisher. I've tried to
remember everything that I have installed before this happened. I didn't try
to use an FTP till Publisher stopped working. I've checked all the security
settings that I could find and they are all on medium to low. The only thing
that I have changed since the start of the problem was the IPS, and I think I
changed the IPS before I got publisher, but I'm not sure. I've changed from
DSL to Cable and Back to DSL when I moved. I haven't changed my user name or
password at my host and he even reset it to be sure. But I can't login to my
cpanel now either. Sorry, if I'm rambling, but I'm trying to think of
anything that could cause the problem and give you an overview.

Actually your rambling might help.

The fact that you cannot log in to your website and your control panel
suggests to me that the problem is not with Publisher. If you cannot log
into your webhost, then that is the fundamental issue and focus on that
first. I would then guess that though you have checked and rechecked your
user name and password, that perhaps you are still not typing them
correctly. They can be case sensitive. If you can figure out why you cannot
login to your webhost and the control panel, you will probably find the
fundamental problem.

You said that you use Avast for your antivirus and firewall...Avast doesn't
have a firewall to my knowledge. Go to Control Panel on your computer >
Security Center or Windows Firewall > disable the Windows firewall and try
to login to your webhost and the cpanel.

Also in the Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced tab: check "Enable
folder view for FTP sites", and check or uncheck "Use Passive FTP (for
firewall and DSL modem compatibility)"....try the opposite from what you
find.

XP...have you installed SP2?

From there I would suggest going back to the articles I referenced and
reading them again. Here are some others that use different words, and might
help you understand.

Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:

Three top questions about publishing a Web site using Publisher 2003:

Troubleshoot publishing Publisher Web sites:

And finally, some people find using a third party FTP program easier.
Filezilla is a free and popular one:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla
If you are using a form on your site, then you will have to use HTTP
uploading protocol.

Here is some information about forms and FPSE: Publisher web publication
forms 101 :

That's all that I can think of to help you. If the articles aren't clear the
first time you read them, then read them again until you understand them. I
can't present or explain that content better than is done in those articles.
But once again, unless you can solve the fundamental issue of not being able
to login to your webhost, the rest of the information about Publisher is
moot. So focus your attention there first.

Good luck.

Thank you very much. While the Cpanel and email problems started after the
Publisher problems, I did find the answer to them. Got that fixed. I did
reread articles and I did figure out what and where FPSE was. DUH, If I find
do get this to work finally, I will take notes and post them for others that
are as slow as I am. Until I had this problem, I loved my Publisher and I
haven't found anything I like better yet.
