My question was deleted

I entered a question yesterday since I have now lost well over 200
photographs using MS Office Picture Manager and it was deleted from this
forum....WHY?

I edited photos and saved the edits. Now the fotos dissapear before my eyes.
Initially I can see a thumbnail in Explorer and when I click on it to view
it becomes an icon. Other times times it becomes an icon automatically which
will not open with ANY program. All one sees in Picture Manager is a box with
an x. In Picture and fax viewer it states no preview available. Yet in
explorer the file is still there showing the # of kbytes, and the size info
is lost. Does Picture Manager destroy photos for ever?
Does it corrupt files? If so NO ONE SHOULD USE IT if they value their
photographs!!!

I am shocked that Microsoft would put such a product in a very expensive
software (MS Office).

Your message wasn't "deleted", you just can't find it. (try searching
for your name)
As for your pictures, it's hard telling what you actually did to your
system. I haven't had any issues with Picture Manager, but then I don't
try to use it as a convenient replacement for an image editor. Since you
have no idea what you did, I would suggest you move another copy of your
originals over to the harddrive and try again.

As for you being shocked about the PM being included in Office, perhaps
the problem is the operator?

I saved the page dealing with Picture Manager posts where I entered the
question under "my Favorites". I've been back to it multiple times, and can
read many of the posts which have been there for a couple of years. My post
was there initially when I first entered it a couple of days ago but it is
now gone. Posts are not listed chronologically but searching down the entire
list does not reveal the post.

Anyway, I did nothing more than what the Picture Manager provides. I either
did an 'autocorrect' or I edited brightness, contrast or color saturation on
photos. when I liked what I saw I either hit file-save, or ctrl+s or
file-save all. All routine Windows stuff. When one does this one sees a
flashing saving image as usual. This is routine windows stuff. When I
initially went to explorer to view the photos under 'my pictures' with
thumbnail view or Picture & Fax viewer THEY WERE ORIGINALLY THERE!!! Then
before my eyes the thumbnails of the fotos became photo icons, and I could
never see them again. I have tried updating my display drivers (already
up-to-date), reinstalling them, slowing hardware acceleration to 'none', and
even tried a proprietary JPEG repair software trial and nothing works. By
the way, I own 5 different photo editor software programs. I just thought
that the Office one was easy to use, I have HP photoeditor, finepix viewer,
photoimpressions, Cameramate ProPix, among others.

Picture Manager simply destroyed my photos from my dream vacation to Italy
and I am very anoyed that there is no fix. I did not do anything unusual. I
have been a computer user for over 20 years and use computers all day at work
and home and consider myself to be moderately savvy. I do need more
expertise to deal with this problem, so if anyone at Microsoft is aware of
this problem with Picture Manager corrupting photo files please give me some
advice. I have been using JPEG and other files for many years and never had
this problem before. I have the same Nikon digital camera that I have used
for 4 years with no other problems. Thanks

By the way, thanks for the suggestion to search under my name. I did that
and did find my posts. However the posts are not there when I search under
"Picture Manager' Maybe this will help others.

For the moment, ignore the "thumbnails", switch to Details for instance.
Are the files listed. If so, what program opens when you double click

This information was on my first post which I found later by putting in my
name...Here it is:

I edited around 200 JPG photos with Picture Manager (color, brightness, etc)
within a folder. After finishing I clicked on 'save all' under File. I also
renamed the files. After this none of the files can be seen as photos.
Under Windows Explorer Thumbnails I only get an icon. Under Filmstrip and
Windows Picture & Fax viewer it states "no preview available" The files only
generate a box with an X under Picture Manager. Under explorer 'details' it
shows them to be JPEG files and size (around 350KB each), and date last
modified. Unlike photos in other folders which do display well, under
details it does not give the 'dimension' information. In other folders these
are 1600 x 1200. Can these 200 pictures be salvaged? Were they corrupted by
Picture Manager and lost forever?
