My reading pane in Outlook has greyed out - why and how can I fix

Hi all - the "reading pane" under my "view" drop down menu has greyed out and
I can't seem to find out why or how I can get it back, so that I can view my
emails without having to double click on the item in the inbox. Any ideas or
suggestions?
