My Recent Documents Office 2003 SP1

When I try to look at or open 'My Recent Documents' to see the last x files
that I opened I do not have that as an option. Went to Tool Options, General
and Recently Used File LIst and entries fields are both grayed out (not
selectable?) Any suggestion on how to activate this so I can use this? I did
use this before in Office 2000, however, since I have loaded Office 2003 and
SP1 I cannot access this option. Thank you in advance on your help.

Hi Tony,

Are you using TWEAKUI or X-Teq or other feature tweaker?
If so you may need to change the settings.

X-teq (Treeview)
Appearance=>Start Menu=>Options=>Recent Documents History

MS TweakUI
~~~~~~~~~~~
IE Tab - turn on [x] Add new documents to Documents on Start menu
You can still have the list be non-visible on the Start menu.
TWEAKUI Settings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IE Tab: [x] Add new documents to Documents on Start menu
IE Tab: [ ] Show Documents on Start Menu
Paranoia Tab: [x] Clear Document History at Logon

Bob: Thank you for your response. I do not believe that I was clear in my
question. So I will rephrase it hoping that you get a clearer idea of what I
really mean.
1. No I do not use TweakUI or X-Teq. I think you were addressing Documents
on the Start Menu which I do not use at all.
2. What I really want is - when I open MS Office 2003 Excel or Word - I
would like to see the last x files that I did previously open in that
specific application (Excel or Word.)
Right now, I do not even have 'My Recent Documents' as an option. I am
talking about the Left Hand Column with the Icons under Look In when I open
Excel or Word. I even went to Tool Options, General
and Recently Used File LIst and entries fields are both grayed out (not
selectable?)

Any suggestions for this?
Thanks again, TonynMI

Hi Tony,

The greying out of that option usually comes from using
TweakUI or other brand registry adjuster that blocks the
Office apps from being able to set the 'recent documents'
choice registry setting, nothing to do with the Start menu.

If you're using Windows XP you TweakUI is one of the MS
Powertoys available for download through
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/default.mspx
and you can use it to check that setting previously mentioned.

Bob: I did download TweakUI V2.10.0.0 and checked Allow Recent Documents on
Start Menu. Then I rebooted (Power OFF.) After the reboot, I checked MS
Office 2003 Excel and Word and neither of those applications allow me to use
'My Recent Documents' as an option. I am talking about the Left Hand Column
with the Icons under Look In when I open Excel or Word. I even went to Tool
Options, General
and Recently Used File List and entries fields are both grayed out (not
selectable?)
Is there a specific Registry Entry that I can use Regedit to change to allow
me to use 'My Recent Documents?'
I even used the option in TweakUI to repair my registry.
Any additional ideas to correct this problem?
Another problem I am having is when I Customize Hide inactive Icons they
only remain as I set them until I reboot and then they revert back to the
previous settings. Example: I set 'You have new email' to Always Show. It
remains as such, Always Show if I get new email, until I reboot then it goes
back to Hide when inactive. I do use Apply, then OK.
If you cannot help me with the above issues I do understand. Is there
someone else or another site I should go to, to resolve these issues? Thanks
again for your time and help. I greatly appreciate your help!

Finally got it to work. I had to use TweakUI and set the following under
Explorer: Allow Recent Document on Start and Maintain Document History.
However, Office 2003 does not show the most recent used files under the File
Menu as Office 2000 did.
Thanks Bob for your help.

Hi Tony,

Once you have the TweakUI settings working did you
turn on the Tools=>Options=>General recent files
setting again in Word then save a file to see if
it is listed?

Hello Bob: Yes, I did try it both in Excel and Word. In Office 2000 both Aps
would show the most recent x files that were saved under the File Menu.
However, in Office 2003 this is not shown. In reality, Office 2003 deleted
some of the previous enhancements that Office 2000 had.
Thanks again,

Hi Tony,

That feature is still available in the Office 2003
apps. You may want to try running a detect & repair
option as well as also making the TweakUI I.E. adjustments
previously mentioned in addition to those you changed.
