My saved document no longer appears in folder after renaming it

I tried to rename a document in Word after saving it to My Documents file.
Now the document does not appear in either the old or the new name.

I can find it in My Documents if I go thru the Start button to My
Documents. It is also found in the Recycle Bin. I tried to copy it to My
Documents from there but it didn't work.

I have tried to find help using Microsoft Help button but the prompts to
restore/retrieve a document don't work either. I'm most likely not
understanding what I'm supposed to do.

If you renamed it with file extensions displayed and overwrote the file
extension, then you won't see it in Word's File Open dialog unless you
choose "All Files."

Thank you Suzanne. That worked.

To fix this for later, rename it again to add the .doc extension. Usually
when you rename a file and are trying to overwrite the extension, Windows
will warn you that this may make the file unusable; you must have ignored
the warning!
