My spell checker doesn't work at all in Word 2007.

I've tried unchecking the auto-detect language, turning off custom
dictionaries, making sure it checks everything. I'm pissed because I just
noticed and I've been sending documents to professors assuming that since I
didn't have any red squiggles that my spelling was correct.

Is the correct language applied to text?

What, if anything, happens when you manually run spell check (for example by
pressing F7)?
