My symbols dialog box does not open, can you help?

I went to put a telephone symbol into a word document for a homework
assinment. I went to Insert, clicked Symbols and got nothing. Do I need to
turn something on or off to make this feature work? I can not figure this one
out. Thank you to anyone who can help me with this problem.

Hi Stacy,

To get "Insert > Symbol" back working, you could try the steps mentioned in http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissngMenusEtc.htm

Or try the Repair feature in Word ("Help > Detect and Repair").

If you recently installed some dubious freeware fonts, you might try to remove them from the Windows Fonts folder... Corrupt fonts can cause trouble for "Insert > Symbol".

If you don't find a way to fix the issue, you could try the following for trouble-shooting:
Go to the VBA editor (Alt+F11), Immediate window (Ctrl+G) and type
Dialogs(wdDialogInsertSymbol).Show
Then type Enter or Return at the end of the line.
If that brings up the dialog, you have some problem with the user interface only, such as a corrupt Data key. If not, something prevents the dialog from showing, such as a corrupt font or corrupt Word installation.

Greetings,
Klaus
