My Tasks don't Show Summary Tasks on PWA in MSP2007

Stacey

Hi,

In Project Web Access, under "My Tasks", it only shows tasks and not summary
tasks. If you have a lot of tasks, it makes it near impossible to find
anything. Microsoft decided to remove this feature with Project2007, but I
have seen so many posts asking for it, thought I would check with this group
to see if there is any way around this.

For other people that have asked for this, any insight as to how you have
worked around this would be very helpful as the PWA is not very useful
without it.

Thank you to any and all that can help us out!

Hi Stacey,

The only two ways of seeing the summary task(s) are
1. Apply the Infrastructure update, then a drop down field is available to
show the task heirarchy. It's not very pretty but it does the job.
2. Click on the task and you'll see the task heirarchy as part of the task
details.

The other better option is to make the task names more descriptive which
comes down to a training issue.

Thanks for the quick response Ben!

1. We have applied updates up to November, 2008. Was this update after
that? I am not sure where to look for this drop down field with the task
hierarchy.

2. Thanks for the suggestion, any other ideas on how to make it easier for
our developers to find their tasks?

3. Will keep the naming recommendation as a last resort, as it still makes
it difficult to find one out of twenty to thirty tasks.

Thanks!! Stacey

Hi Stacey,
You should have the IU installed if you are current upto October 08 - see
the details here on how to access the Task Path for each task -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721699.aspx

In terms of other methods, make sure you don't just rely on My Tasks as the
sole method of communication with your devs; and its worth asking the PMs if
they can make the task names more descriptive, perhaps you could set up a
template so that they are not re-inventing the wheel for each new project.

Hi Stacey, the way we tackle this is by having a template for resourced tasks
with the following syntax...

Level 1: Project No & Name
Level 2: Project No & Name – Region / Outsourcing
Level 3: Project No & Name – Region / Outsourcing - Discipline (PM / Engg /
Constructiion / Commissioning)
Level 4: Project No & Name – Region / Outsourcing - Discipline –
Specialization
Level 5: Project No & Name – Region / Outsourcing - Discipline –
Specialization (one task for each resource)

This way level 5 will be the actual resource assignment.

Hi Everyone,
I have the same issue as Stacey. I just learned about Managing Views in the
Server Settings, and thought I could just add the Task ID to the view, and
then sort by task ID, so at least the tasks would display in order. However,
there isn't a SORT/ORDER BY option in the My Work/My Tasks view....does
anyone know why, and if its possible to do? I think this would be a good
workaround if possibe...

You can add the Unique ID view (the task ID changes when you add/insert
tasks). You can sort on the column by clicking on the column heading in the
My Assignments view. If the Unique ID view won't do it for you and you need
task ID, create an Enterprise Custom Field which equals [Task ID] and then
sort on that new field instead.
