my text will not center within my margins in landscape view

Office 2003, Windows XP

In a Word document, landscaped, I cannot get my text centered. I've checked
my page setup which is fine. I've tried Ctrl/E as well as the center button
on my toolbar. It centers the text at 3" even though my margins are 11" x
8-1/2. I don't have this problem in "portrait". Can anyone help me?

Your paper size (not your margins) is 11" x 8.5". Most likely your right
margin is larger than 1.25". Go to File | Page Setup to change it.

My left and right margins are set at 0.5

I'd say you are encountering a minor bug in the Columns command. Did
you ever change this document to multiple columns?

Even if you didn't, go to Format/Columns and click "One" in the
Presets section.

Note you need to click "One" rather than simply verifying it is set to
1 column. What you are actually looking for is the "Equal column
width" option to be turned on at the bottom of the dialog box. It may
be disabled but using the Presets will turn the option on. It's this
option that allows Word to reflow the text to your new margin/paper
orientation.

I am not even working in columns. This is just straight typing. I'm trying
to center a single line heading. I tried it on other peoples computers with
no problem. Could this have anything to do with the Normal.doc? There must
be something in my computer that will not allow it to read my settings.
Powerpoint and Excel centers with no problem. This problem is in Word only.

No one suggested you were working in columns. Beth gave you the solution to
the problem you are encountering. Take it or leave it.

Sure you are. Even if you don't have a multi-column format you are
still using 1 column of text. If you weren't using any columns then
you wouldn't have any text area for typing.

Did you even try what I suggested?

Unless you can confirm that in the Format/Columns dialog box your
column width is 7.5" and the "Equal column width" option is selected
(it might be disabled but there should be a tick in the box) then I
have no further suggestions.

Beth, yes it did try your suggestion. It worked for each new document if I
went through the format/column but doesn't default. Our IT tech thought
there was a quirk in the normal.doc file. I appreciate your taking the time
to help, didn't appreciate the "take it or leave it" attitude from Suzanne
Barnhill. Unprofessional and a poor reflection of customer service.

You will need to either create a new Normal.dot or modify your current
Normal.dot in order to make your Columns modifications the default.

takes is a few mouse clicks to verify.
