My textbox jumps outside the page margins when I add a caption

I'm using Word 2007 with Vista to create a manuscript for a book. I create a
custom text box on either the left or right side of the page with tight
wrapping of text. I insert a photograph in the textbox. Save it. All is well.
Then I add a caption. It doesn't show so I push enter until it does. At that
point the textbox jumps out of the margin and I cannot move it back into the
proper place.
What do I have to do differently?

hard to say without looking over your shoulder. Are you positive the
picture is inserted into the textbox? Are you in the header/footer range
while trying this (you want to be there if the same picture should be
visible on multiple pages)?
