My typed text does not show on screen

Today, for the first time, I experienced a 15 to 30 second delay between
typing charcters and seeing the characters appear in the document. I am
using WORD 2003. To my knowledge, no settings or options were changed to
cause the problem

That is usually the symptom of a bad printer driver, a bad graphics driver
or a bad add-in. The former is most likely. So check that you have the
latest printer driver appropriate for your OS and then delete and reinstall
the printer.

Let us know of that doesn't fix the problem.

Terry , thank you for taking the time to respond. I am set to print-plot to
four different printers and I have not had an issue plotting. My issue is the
delay time from typing a word to having it appear in the document. I am
experiencing a 15-30 second lag. Are you saying that a bad printer drive can
affect the operations of typing?

Thanks, Larry

Yes. Try a different printer set as Windows Default and test again.

Terry, good afternoon: Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I have changed my default printer to 4 different printers to no success.

To add to the confusion, when I open a new word document, I have no delay in
viewing what I have typed, but when I open any old word document, I get a
10-15 second delay before I see what I have typed.

Thoughts?

Thank you, Larry

A new document is OK, but an older document is slow to respond. When you
have created a new document, saved and closed it, if you reopen it is it
still OK or is it now slow to respond too?

What happens if you run Word in Safe Mode? From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document now and see if it is still slow to respond.

Mr. Farrell, Good morning>

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

If I go to safe mode: I have no issues of a delay in viewing the typed words
in a new and old document.

If I open a new document, type, save, then reopen it, yes I experience a
delay in viewing what I typed.

Thanks, Larry

That's fairly conclusive that you have either a third party add-in that is
causing Word problems or a partially corrupt or incompatible printer driver.

Try switching to a different printer (if you have one available) and see if
that resolves the issue. Failing that, check that you have the latest driver
for your printer/OS and then delete and reinstall the printer.

If it isn't the printer driver, then look for add-ins and remove them: then
add them back one at a time until you find the culprit. See how to find
add-ins at

If you are still having problems, post here again for some further advice.
