MY Vanished Messages !!!

T

T.A.

Hello,

This evening, upon checking one of my folders to which e-
mail messages are recieved in Outlook Express (v.6), I
discovered that that entire folder's collection of
messages had completely disappeared !!! This has never
happened before and shocks me to the bone. There are many
important messages there in that folder and now they seem
to have EVAPORATED without a trace!

I tried a feature of System Michanic's (latest version)to
try to alliviate the problem by myself. The feature I
tried allowed me to find and recover deleted files. SM
asked me which e-mail client I'm looking to recover files
from - I selected Outlook Express. SM scanned but found
traces of e-mail messages in OE that i manually
deleted...messages which were in the DELTED MESSAGES
folder. This did not help me to even find the vanished
contents of my folder.

Next, I tried SM's general deleted files recovery utility.
It threw a list of a bunch of items I had deleted at one
time or another. GREAT, but what now? Where are the
messages in this lenghty list??

OK, so SM was not going to help me. Clearly. I brain-
stormed and took into account recent events which could've
brought on this issue. If you're a pro in OE, maybe you
could piece together what really was the cause and how to
perhaps bring back my much-needed e-mail messages.

Most recent events occured this eve as follows:

1st event:
I used a feature of SM to clean junk files on my
PC. I defined those files and got a short list of no more
than 5 items that matched my ctiteria. I selected all of
these items which ALL happened to be zero-KB in size
folders and clicked to get rid of them. They all moved to
Recycling Bin on Windows 98SE Desktop where later today I
permanantly deleted them with anohter of SM's tool, the
INCINERATOR. NOTHING ABOUT THOSE ~5 FOLDERS STRUCK ME AS
BEING RELATED TO OUTLOOK EXPRESS AND ALL WERE 0-KB IN
SIZE. I've used, performed this operation many times and
with many files and have never had any problems resulting
from my utilization of it.

2nd event:
I recieved an odd, never-before-seen-by-me-
warning from my antivirus program (Alwil's Avast 4, Home
Edition) when I asked OE, when it initiated at start up,
to download messages off of all of my e-mail accounts. I
do not exactly know or remmber what this message was
trying to tell me, but I went about along nonetheless and
clicked CONTINUE, thus instructing the Avast to allow the
e-mail message to come through as it was sent in its
original state. This e-mail came from a known service to
which I subscribe and therefore trust. I accepted without
first trying to investigate what my antivirus was trying
to tell me in about this particular message. So that was
that. I did not get a chance to check the folder where the
messages vanished prior to the download of this
questionable e-mail. I dont know if the vanished e-mail
messages where there when my PC started.

So there you have it: two events...either could've been
the cause for the disapearance of my precious e-mails. It
could've been a tainted message I downloaded or some file
I deleted that erased the contents of a folder in OE. If
you know or have a good guess, I'd like much to read it.
Keep in mind that the problem's origin could've been the
OE program itself; FYI.

My next attempt at getting back the lost e-mails will be
to try Alwil Avast! 4's system/file restore-like feature.
I can only hope that you may provide me with some valuable
bits for the resolution before I could unintentionally
ruin my only chance for a satisfactory solution as I am
relativelly a novice to the technical aspect of OE and/or
the programs it frequently interacts with. I'm hoping that
there's still SOME chance to get the very important
messages that have disapeared without a trace from an
Outlook Express folder.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE 4 YOUR TIME AND EFFORT!

these newsgroups:

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups). The links under the newsgroup
references are for use with MS's web newsreader (not exactly the best way to
post but it works for some people)
