My Word 2003 locks up and the Spelling&Grammar icon keeps running

In Word 2003, when I am typing in a document at some point the Spelling and
Grammar icon (the one that looks like a book with a pencil writing in it) at
the bottom continuously runs and locks up my document. All I can do is end
task and retype what I have lost. Any idea how to fix this?
