My Word 2003 locks up and the Spelling&Grammar icon keeps running

In Word 2003, when I am typing in a document, at some point the spelling and
grammar icon (the one with the book with the pencil writing) continuously
runs and locks up my document. I have to end task to stop it and I lose some
of my work. This never happened with Word 2002. Any idea how to stop this?
