My Word 2003 will neither Save nor Save As.

My Word 2003 will neither Save nor Save As. I have tried playing with
options. I have also reloaded an earlier version of the registry. Every so
often Word asks to save a new version of Normal. Is this related? I do not
save the new version as I was not updating that feature on purpose. Are
there regitry entries that I might update to addres these issues? Is there
an easy way to return all Office registry entries to some sort of default?
Are preferences stored anywhere else I might look? Thanks for any ideas you
have. It is most inconvenient to not be able to save!

Deleting normal.dot worked for a week. I just completely reinstalled Office
2003 after renaming both VBA and Office in the registry as recommended in
Word Troubleshooting. I followed that docuement to its end. Word still
will not Save or Save As. Is there another registry entry I should rename
then reinstall? What about MathType 5- a superset of equation writer? Any
known conflicts? It causes no trouble on my laptop. PDF Converter still
converts files when I ask Word to open a pdf file. I also have TITools from
Texas Instruments installed. It was installed long before this problem
surfaced. I think that's it for 3rd party software. I am using Windows XP
upgraded long ago from XP Home.

This particular problem is most often caused by the Office Plug-in in Norton
AntiVirus, which should be disabled.

I disabled the Office Plug-in (Norton Systemworks Premier 2006), rebooted,
then opened a file in Word. The problem still exists. Should I remove
Office, then reinstall Office again? Detect and Repair?

I'd start with Detect and Repair. Reinstalling Word/Office rarely helps
because it doesn't overwrite Normal.dot, the Registry, or add-ins, which are
the most common sources of problems. Beyond that, I would suggest that you
look to see if there is a macro called FileSave or FileSaveAs that is
intercepting the built-in commands. Also, I assume that this is not a trial
version that has expired and that you have activated the product?

I have done that twice earlier but nothing changed. I looked at my macros
and found nothing entitled Save, SaveAs, FileSave or FileSaveAs. The version
of Office I am using has been on my machine for roughly two years or so -
maybe a little less. It is a fully purchased and, I assume, registered copy.
I think I recall activating the program as I do that for all products that
require it. The saving problem started occurring at the end of October/early
November so the program had been installed for a long time. Before I
reinstalled Office, I renamed the Offfice and VBA registry entries and
removed all templates. I find it interesting that these renamed entries are
no longer in the Registry. I followed all the suggestions in the
Troubleshooting Word document referenced in the first MS reply to my original
post. As far as I remember, the addins I am using have been there much
longer than the problem so may not be a problem but who knows. Thank you so
much for workiing on New Year's Eve and for providing such prompt responses
to my postings.

The first sentence of my previous reply is a bit unclear. I have now run
Detect and Repair three times - twice before the latest MS response then once
more since the latest MS response. I still cannot save in Word. I apologize
for the muddiness. This problem is really getting to me. It shuts down my
productivity.
