My Word doc suddenly becomes inactive when I'm typing. What could.

I'm typing, and the document for no apparent reason becomes inactive or
deselected. It just happened as I was typing this message too so now I'm
seeing it's not just a Word problem. Ever heard of this?

Interesting!

Sounds like you might have some application running in the background
that is capturing focus. Yes, this has occasionally happened to me,
but I've known what's up that causes it because I'm very familiar with
what I have running on my system or know how to check to see what has
just sucked up my processor and/or tossed up some message that
captured focus.

Not exactly sure what to suggest other than see what stuff you have
running in your systray (bottm/left corner of Windows) and pay a lot
of attention to what happens when it happens again. Try checking your
TaskManager (right click the bottom taskbar or hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete and
choose Taskmanager. Then click on the Processes Tab and see what might
have just started sucking up memory...might help you figure out what
just started. Most things like this should not capture focus. So check
ot make sure there isn't some message waiting for you like some timer
or maybe an Outlook message you set or something. Maybe even write
down each time it happens and what you are doing to see if you can
find a pattern to help drill down the problem.

Sorry I can't offer much more help. Maybe someone else has an idea.
However, if you do figure it out, please share and let us know what
was going on.

Good luck...

Sounds like the fan is only kicking in when the processor is sufficiently
hot to shut down the processor. If you leave it a while of cooling, do you
get control back again? The fan should really come on prior to the processor
throttling right off. Theoretically (assuming a Pentium 4 processor), it
should throttle back to 800MHz as it gets to the first throttle state, and
stop it reaching shut-off. Maybe your processor is set to throttle at too
low a temperature. Start BIOS and see what the fan and CPU temp options are
set at.

: Are you using a laptop? This happens to me every time the fan turns

Thanks, Terry. I'll have to check this out.

It only happens when the fan first turns on. It will either click or
go into a selection mode. It doesn't do it the entire time the fan is
running.

Thankfully it's nuisance I don't encounter regularly. I use an
external keyboard for the majority of my computer and it doesn't occur
then - it only happens if I'm using the keyboard on the laptop. I
adjusted the sensitivity of the touch pad but the fan still seems to
trigger it.
