Mysterious Blacked Out Text

We are running Word XP. When we take a document that was created in a
previous version of word and paste the text into our current version of word
a portion of the text will be blacked out (you see an actual rectangular
region that is solid black).

The document prints just fine. If you select to view the document at 75%
it's normal size, the black rectangle disappears and you can see the text
once again.

Any idea what causes this?

Set the view in the File Open dialog to Properties, and look at what is
given for Application. If it's the same as what you're using, it will just
say "Microsoft Word" or "Microsoft Office Word," but if it's an older
version, it will give the version number. Unfortunately, if it's a newer
version, Word has no way of determining that.

From your description of the shading disappearing at a different Zoom,
however, I wonder if this is just a display issue. The only other issue I
know of that sounds at all like this is the one described at “WD2002: A
Black Bar Appears Across the Page When You Type†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303507, and I doubt if that's relevant
here.

Thank you for your replies. While the issue is still persisting, your
responses has caused some good questions to finally get asked by our staff
and it looks like we're starting to come up with better informed questions.
