Mysterious change in Search targets?

Jonathan

All,
I use ON2007 Beta2 (no time right now to do all the careful work to prepare
for and update to TR for all the B2 Office apps) and something changed my
index of searched files, cutting way back on what is indexed.

Now the indexing interface (I did update to WDS3.0) says I am only indexing
"onenote//(and then a very long string of numbers...)" and a file folder
"Outlook" The C: drive is not checked. There are only 2749 items indexed,
where there had been 67,000 or so before.

I am less interested in finding the nasty reason for this than knowing how
to go to a default setting that can reindex. And how to keep this from
happening. Do I just throw away the index? Why would this happen?

If the answer is that I have to go to TR, then I have to wait for the
availability of several free hours. This is the price of the high
productivity we get from our wonderful computers, right? <big sarcastic grin>

OK, I know... it's a beta <more grimaces, er, grins>

Sigh.

WDS3 has just been releases as RTM:

if you install it, then you need b2tr

What is the difference between this file named

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-XP-x86-enu.exe

and the file I recently downloaded named

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-x86-en-US.exe ?

Interestingly, the WDS interface has no way for me to determine which
version it is. But I dug it out of the support information in "Add or
Remove Programs." I currently have version 3.00.5486.0108 installed. Is
the version you list here newer than that? The MS KB article doesn't give
the full version and build number.

Also the web page says it is "Windows Desktop Search 3.0 RTW for Windows
XP." Is that "RTW" a typo or is it something different?

OK, I will get to that... but what are the expected entries in the indexing
list if all is well? What should a user do if the list is obviously too
short, or has been changed by some unknown process? Right now I have chosen
to rebuild the whole index and because it's the weekend I can leave the
laptop on for 36 hours. I hope that's enough time.

MS is saying btw that WDS3 RTM might not work with B2TR. So far, it is
working here though.
The indexing pane should show all 0s for the statistics.
