Mysterious downloading when opening Office apps while online

Matthew

Just this last week or so, I have noticed that when I am
online (compuserve, dial-up), if I open a Excel or Word
file on my PC, there is a lot of download activity
(several 100k bytes being received) and the file is very
slow to open.

If I right click on the file while online I get the same
thing happening - a long download and a long delay before
the normal right-click menu appears.

While offline, everything works normally.

Virus scanning does not flag anything on my hard drive. I
do not have a firewall installed (does XP have some built
in firewall?)

I am using XP Home Edition and Office 2000.

Any ideas what is going on here, and what should I do to
stop this? Thanks

XP has an optional firewall - turn it on.
