Mysterious gray box

A client of mine has an odd problem with her PC. About once a day, a gray box about 400X20 appears and she cannot work after that. The box sometimes shows desktop items, as if someone had used scissors to cut away the file and reveal the desktop beneath. The only way to fix the problem is to shut down the box and restart. Apparently, this only happens in Office XP products. We've tried a new video card, different video drivers, and even a new PC. This appears to me to be a problem in Office XP though....anyone have any ideas??

Is that mysterious gray box by chance in the place where you see the drawing
toolbar in Word? You can check by right-clicking the word toolbar, choosing
customize, and checking Drawing.

No, this box appears just shy of halfway down the screen about 1-1 1/2 inch from the left side. Its gray, or white, or gray and showing My Pictures from the desktop
