Mysterious Keyboard Shortcut in Word?

James Silverton

I recently wanted to check some currency symbols and brought up the Help
section. Under "Typing the Euro", in addition to the one I know, ALT+0128,
there was also:

"Type 20ac, then press ALT+X"

This *does* work and one or two other numbers also give symbols other than
blank boxes but can anyone tell me where this operation is documented? I
can't even find ALT+X in the "Keyboard Shortcuts".

Hi James,

You are typing the Unicode hex value and Alt + x (ToggleCharacterCode)
toggles between them. (Available in Word 2002 and later versions)

You can find the hex value of a character either in the Windows
Character Map or in Word under Insert/Symbol. You need to select
"(normal text)" and change "From" in "Character Code" to Unicode
(hex).

As for where this is documented, take a look in Help under "Type
Unicode characters by using the keyboard".

You're welcome. :)

As for learning, heck the best place to learn is in the newsgroups.
That's where I picked up this information. <g>
