Mysterious Sent Messages/Multiple Sent Messages

Outlook 2007 sends twice as many messages as I have in the outbox (eg. 2
instead of 1, 4 instead of 2), by the indication at the bottom right of the
window when I "Send/Recieve". Also, when I check for mail with "Send/Recieve"
and have no messages in the Outbox, I often see 2 or 3 messages Sent in the
same area at the bottom of the window.

Do I have a virus? I use Trend Micro Internet Security and keep it regularly
updated.

I have Vista, Dell Inspiron 530, that works fine otherwise.

Have you already applied Service Pack 2 for Office 2007? It fixes some
counting bugs regarding this.
In addition, you could check if you have a stuck read receipt.
