mystery dialog box open prevents using word?

T

taydad

Wednesday morning, the Microsoft automatic updates did an update on my
computer (no idea what...it just did it - there was a message to that effect,
which is the only way I know). Ever since, I cannot open Word docs. When I
try, I get a message that says "an open dialog box prevent completing this
command. Close open dialog boxes to continue." Then the windows installer
screen pops up for a sec (and acts like it's gonna ask me for the
installation CDs...which I have)...but then it goes away and I'm suddenly
back at my desktop. I've restarted my computer to make sure there are no
dialog boxes open. When I try, nothing else is running on my system.

Any ideas???

I am having the same exact problem since the update as well. I can get the
documents to open, but have to click cancel on installer multiple times. I
am also getting this problem with Excel documents, so it appears to have
affected all of Office 2003.

Sounds like I may have dodged a bullet. I have Automatic Updates set to
semi-automatic (it notifies me that updates are available, and I can choose
to download them). I got the notice Wednesday, said OK, and then expected to
be notified that they were ready to install. I've heard nothing further: I
wonder if MS discovered the problem and canceled the download.

I've installed them all without problem. Are any of you using Norton Anti
Virus? If so, try disabling the Office plug-in under Advanced options.

No i'm not using Norton - i hate Norton, it's worse than having a virus.
Word was working fine until download of MS update.
Now I have to keep hitting cancel on the installer. Sometimes I have to
bring up the task manager to end the installer.

Have you tried running the Detect and Repair option from the Help Menu(of
any of the Office applications)?

I just did that and it said it setup successfully, but there was no change.
Here's what's happening.
When I try to open a document with Word - the windows installer box pops up
and I have to hit cancel a couple of times and wait for Word to start. I
have no idea what it is trying to install.

When I start Excel, it says something about speech recognition not being
installed and i have to hit cancel on that for it to start.

As I said before, both of these weird problems occured immediately after
installing the most recent Office update.

I ran detect and repair on Excel and it fixed the speech recognition problem.
However running the detect/repair on Word did not solve the windows
installer problem. After it finished resetting registry keys, the installer
immediately started up again. It is the more annoying problem because it
takes so long to cancel out, and sometimes I have to use task manager to end
it.

I also ran my A/V program - no viruses found, and scanned my computer for
spyware.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the installer is corrupt, but first what
happens if you start Word in safe mode? From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word open and close correctly now?
