Mystery file lock

Our group is accessing several Access 2000 databases (MDB)
files on our network via local MDE files and linked
tables. On occation, we find we cannot Compact and Repair
our database (MDB) files because there is a file lock
present. When we check the PC, Access or the linked file
is not open or visibly running. Opening and closing the
local file does not clear the lock. Once we reboot the
PC, the file lock clears and we can Compact and Repair the
database. Any ideas as to the cause and prevention?

Have you made sure that it's not a service that's locking the file rather
than a program?

I'm pretty sure access will have a service for running Access.

Jay,
You can get a "mystery lock" sometimes if a user exits Access abnormally.
The biggest culprit is probably someone "killing" Access by using Ctrl + Alt
+ Delete. The only way to prevent it is to threaten the removal of body
parts.
