Name formats in Contacts

Does anyone know why, AND a way to change, all my contacts are showing last
name first name (no comma). It doesn't matter if what view I'm in - address
list, detailed cards, etc. And, it doesn't matter how I "file as".
The names are all showing up smith john (for example), instead of john
smith. I checked the details in the contact card fields and both the first
and last names are in the proper fields.

Should be simple to figure out for you, but not for us. You didn't provide
enough information for us.
Examine the sort order you set for a given view.
Examine the format of the field by which you chose to sort.
Outlook will comply.
Obviously, setting the File As... field does nothing for existing Contacts.
