Russ - thanks for your patience - I am learning much and it would be nice to
clear this puzzle (although not urgent).
1. I scanpst'ed 3 sets of pst files called "Outlook", "Archive", and
"InArchive" with no errors.
2. I have just created a new folder and pointed to <containing contact
items> - I called it "NewContacts" but I was able to rename it "Contacts"
and I guess I could include this folder in as well to my address book and
eventually move all the data to it and kill off the others!
3. This new folder and the other one called "AltContacts" looks different to
my regular default "OldContacts" which looks like an Excel table. The other
ones look like blocks of contact data with tabs to go to different alphabet
names.
4. It was a long time ago but I think I created "OldContacts" this way,
imported my old data and am now using it normally. Are you sure I could not
have moved my regular "Contacts" to the Archive.pst?
Thanks
Mervyn

Still not possible. You can neither delete nor rename the default Contacts
Folder. Before things get any worse, close Outlook and run the Inbox Repair
Tool (scanpst.exe) on your PST file, then tell me in more detail just
how
it
is you created these other Contacts Folders in your installation. IMO offers
no repair options for the Address Book, so we need to get your Personal
Folders file back in shape.
Do you have more than one set of PST files in this installation?

Yes -its "Internet Mail Only - security update" . I confirm there are no
other contacts folders in what is called "personal folders" but
there
is
a
folder called "Contacts" hidden away in "Archive Folders" and I think I
copied or moved the original and placed it there moons ago. I have been
using these folders as I would windows explorer which may not be what is
intended! It looks as if I have deleted the original "Contacts"
Perhaps you are cross posting then because I've seen this same post 3
times
already in these Outlook groups.
Mail support mode is listed in Help | About, line 2.
I've already figured out that you must be using Internet Mail Only mode.
If
you are invoking the Address Book in Outlook but getting the Windows
Address
Book instead, you must be using IMO. It doesn't support the Outlook
Address
Book.
I would guess that your failed to import your Contacts into the correct
(default) Contacts Folder in Outlook. What I don't understand is how you
could not have a default "Contacts Folder" in your root Personal Folders
File in View > Folder List. That is not possible. Please look again and
make
sure you are expanding all Folders. I can't figure out how to fix this
without an accurate description of what is in your current profile.

This last post was put here because another MVP told me to post to an
outlook newsgroup.
Sorry for any confusion:
This verifies that I am invoking the address book from Outlook not OE.
Sorry - don't understand what you mean by "mail support mode of Outlook
2000" - I am a stand alone PC with single user operating from an
ISP
pop
account.
I have two folders "Old Contacts" and "Alt Contacts"
I originally did a File< Import/Export>< from another program> and from
memory I think I pointed to a previous address book set up for
Outlo
ok
Express.
This is the third time you've posted this question. Instead of
reposting
the
same question, why don't you answer the questions posed to you
in
the
previous threads?
You haven't provided enough information for anyone to answer.
Verify you are invoking the Address Book in Outlook, not Outlook
Express.
List your mail support mode of Outlook 2000.
Go to View > Folder List and list every Contacts Folder you see there.
State how you imported your Contacts into your installation.

In my system (XP, Outlook 2000) the address book is in a folder
called
"Old
Contacts".
In properties the delete and change name options are greyed
out
and
I
cannot
figure out how to change the name to something more meaningfull.
The address book is just called "Address Book
6.00....Microsoft"
and
was
the
default one when I installed Office 2000 for use in email and
dialling
etc.
I think the confusion in folder names arose from initially importing
an
old
address book from a previous installation when I used Outlook
Express,
into
an "Old Contacts" folder and
I then managed to delete the original default folder called
"Contacts"
Has anyone any ideas?
