Names Have Disappeared from Contact List & Cannot Add

All my contacts on my Outlook Express main window (on the
left side of the screen with the ability to arrow key up &
down to find the name you are looking for) have
disappeared. The "Contact" heading and area for the list
still appears but there is no content. When I tried
entering a "New Contact" I can key in all the relevant
information, but the name & email address -- which would
usually then appear in the "Contacts" list -- does not
appear. Also, since there are no contacts listed, when you
click on "Contacts" the only think you can do (i.e. only
option NOT grayed out is "New Contact") is click on New
Contact & go to that template. The contacts still exist in
my address book, however I cannot drag them from my
address book over to the "Contact" list. An address looks
like it's being dragged over but it does not 'stick'. It
seems that something is blocking the ability for the names
to appear. Somehow I think this is related to AOL Instant
messenger because when I start-up AIM automatically begins
& then when I go to Outlook Express to AIM "buddies" (i.e.
on-line contacts) appear under "Contacts" -- which I do
not want. The only way I can get rid of these is by
exiting AIM. Then a note appears in the "Contacts" area
that says I have no contacts. Also, I can still initiate
an email & start to type in a name, which -- after a few
keystrokes -- will be recognized, & the full name (or
address will appear. So, I am pretty sure the contacts
exist somewhere but are being prevented from appearing on
the Outlook Express main screen under the "Contacts"
heading.

I have now uninstalled AIM but that has not eliminated the
problem. Also, using systems restore is not an option. The
restore point is

This is a group to support Outlook from the Office group of programs.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and is a quite different
program despite its similar name..

You will probably get a faster and more expert answer if you post this to an
outlook express news group.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x

A good website for information on OE is:
