Names won't come up trying to email. HELP PLEASE!

I recently upgraded to Microsoft Office XP and from
Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2002 on my office networked
computer. When I go to new email and hit the "to" or "cc"
or even the "bcc" to get a name/email, nothing happens
and then a window opens up that says "microsoft has
encountered a problem and needs to close...". Once I
close that window, it takes me out of Outlook completely
or it takes me back to my email but not to the new email
window. The error message box that appears says "Error
Signature, AppName: outlook.exe and then the details of
the error is massive stuff that makes no sense, modules,
etc. This problem started right after the upgrade and
I'm going nuts trying to email people. I did notice that
sometimes if I start typing someone's name, their email
automatically pops up in the "to" line and that's fine.
But where is all the hundreds of emails/names I had
before and why is this error doing this. PLEASE HELP???
I'm desperate!

Look under Tools->Email Accounts->Directories->View or Change. Do you have
an Outlook Address Book service installed? If not, back up one step and add
it.

Also, ensure your contact folder is marked as an Outlook Address Book.
Right click on the contact folder, select properties, and on the address
book tab, ensure the check box is active.

I seem to recall that we had similar problems sort of
randomly around the office and we found that the solution
(for a quick fix) was to stop Outlook from using Word as
an email editor. Instructions below from Microsofts KB for
turning off Word as editor in Outlook 2002:

On the Outlook Tools menu, click Options.
On the Mail Format tab, click to clear the "Use Microsoft
Word to edit e-mail messages" check box.
Click OK to save and close the Options.

After we'd disabled Word as the editor, we were able to
use Outlook without constant crashes. Then, as time
permitted, began updating both Windows and Office to the
latest versions and somewhere along the way it both
defaulted back to Word as the editor AND worked properly.
I turned it off again, but that's my personal preference.
Some people liked the Word editor. I found it cumbersome
and a memory hog that I really didn't need for the type of
emails I generally send.

I hope this is enough to get you back up and running at
least until something works to solve the problem. Good
luck to you.
