You're right about the Office Open XML files are Zip files, however, not
all features defined in the ZIP specification are supported in the Open
Packaging specification.
According to the Office Open XML specification part 2, it seems to me that
ZIP64 format extensions shall be recognizable to the Office Open XML spec
compatible applications. So it also could be other related ZIP
records/fields that confuses the Office Applications.
