Nav Bar Only Links to Page 4 From Some Pages

T

trish_th

In a 7 page document, my ability to link to page 4 from the others
toggles. Sometimes I can link to it from pages 1, 2, 3 only. (E.g., if
on page 5, my mouse hovers oover the text associated with the link to
page 4, it does not even show a URL.) If I insert a hypertext link to
page 4 in page 5's nav bar (even though the menu action of inserting a
hyptertext link already shows the link to page 4) - then both page 5 and
7 start to link to page 4, but the links from pages 2 and 3 stop
working. (Note: Page 6 has no nav bar).

How can I get all the links to page 4 working?

Thanks A LOT for your help.

Trish

P.S. In all cases, the text associated with the page 4 link is fine.

Click the navbar to select it. Then click the little wand, click Add,
remove, and reorder links to add, remove, modify, or reorder links on the
selected navbar.

You can add links to other pages of the Web site or to external
destinations. You can delete links from the navigation bar. You can also
change the destination of existing links or change the text that displays on
the navigation bar. You can also change the order in which links appear on
the navigation bar (changing the order of links on a navigation bar will not
change the order of pages in your publication).

If your links work through page 3, then remove the links to 4 - 7, make any
changes you want in the text, etc., then add the pages back in, and your
navbar should repopulate.

David,

Thank you so much for your reply. However, when I click the wand, the
only choice I'm given is "What design do you want to use?" Is it
because I'm running MS Publisher 2000? Is there another way to
accomplish this?

I also tried deleting the nav bar. (I had to do it from each page.)
Then I added it to the first page (since Publisher's help file says not
to add it to more than one page); however, the nav bar was not copied to
subsequent pages. Am I doing this wrong?

Is there any book which goes into enough depth to answer these questions
for me? The ones I have found locally (i.e., no amazon.com yet) are too
high-level. I truly appreciate your help! But I feel bad relying on
you as my total tech support system.

Thanks a MILLION, David.

Trish,

In the future be sure to specify which version of a program you are using
when posting in these help forums. Different versions will vary, and Pub
2000 is no exception.

Basically the approach to repair the navbar is the same, but you find the
Web Properties under File and the Page tab. The navbar wizard, to add a
button for a page to the menu, pulls the text for the button off of whatever
you enter into the "title" box for that page. Don't select the text on the
button and change it instead of changing it in the "title" field or add your
own textual link over the button, and setting your own hyperlink on it. This
will corrupt the navbar.

You may still be able to repair the navbar. Go to the page in your pub file
that corresponds to the bad navbar button, on that page go to File, Web
Properties, select the text in the "title" field and delete it, and uncheck
the "add hyperlink to web bar" box, and click OK. Publisher will then
repaginate the file and remove that button from each copy of the navbar
across all pages. When it completes that operation then re-open the web
properties box and re-enter your title and re-check the box to add the
hyperlink and click OK, Publisher will again repaginate your file and will
then add the button for the page.

If this doesn't work, then you will probably have to rebuild the navbar from
scratch. You would delete the navbar from each page, uncheck the add
hyperlink to the navbar under web properties for each page, save and close
your file. Open it again, and insert a fresh navbar by going to Insert >
Design Gallery. Then go through each page and recheck add hyperlink to
navbar. Its been a while since I have done this, so you may have just one
navbar complete on your first page. If so, copy it and paste it on each
other page.

One of the limitations of using Pub 2000 is that the navbar is limited to 10
pages. If you get frustrated with the navbar wizard, or your site will end
up with more than 10 pages, I would suggest building your own. If you want
to go that route, post back.

As far as good books? Sorry, I don't know many. I reference a lot of David
Bartosik's material about web building at http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/
You can read through the Post Categories or type in key words in the search
field in the top right corner. Don't forget Help under Publisher. Lots of
good info there, if not a bit hard to find sometimes. Use key words again
under index, or peruse the Contents. Mary Saurer has a lot of good
information on her site: http://msauer.mvps.org/ And Ed Bennett also has
excellent material: http://ed.mvps.org And you can always check out the
Microsoft site:
