Was that the only Notebook you had open? CLosing a Notebook shouldn't make
the Navigation Pane disappear.
What happens if you press Alt-F1? Does that bring the pane back?
You will otherwise need to reopen the Notebook to get it to appear in the
pane once you get it back.
