I would like to change the color of the active link on my
navigation bars. If I enter a color in a:active of my
stlye sheet, it does make any difference. It seems to
default to the 'body' text colour.

Is there another style command I can use in my style
sheet? All other a styles commands swork (a:hover,
a:link, a: visited etc)

I am not using a theme (want to keep the site fast!!)

In your style script or body tag (link colors) the order should be link - visited - hover - active.
Reason when you click a link (i.e. make it active) 2 rules could apply to it hover and active,
so the style defined last wins out
