NDR 5.1.1 with Outlook 2003

Hi everybody,

we have a SBS2000 with its own exchange server.
One of our users can´t send some kind of mails to another one. This user has
installed Outlook 2003.
Users with Outlook 2000 can send this mails to the user.

Is there any configuration for Outlook2003.

Our server hasn't got any filter applied and both users have their smtp
directions correctly and in our Active Directory Domain.

It's an unique domain and the user who doesn't receive the mails, doesn't
change her smtp direction and it's never been moved from her AD site.

Never come across this NDR before, but the text implies that there is a
mismatch in language support. For example, the server could be english and
the outlook 2003 client is chinese or maybe the Outlook 2003 client is set
to encode messages in format the server doesn't support.

Lets start with the later since it is easy to check. Start Outlook 2003 and
select Tools > Options > Mail Format > International Options button. The
dropdown at the bottom should be set to western european (iso) for english
systems. There is an auto checkbox right above that dropdown and it is
checked by default.

Trusty bablefish to the rescue. I get...

Some of the adressees did not receive their message
It is not possible to be located to the following adressees:

So if bablefish did its job, where is this "user1" address coming from. By
that I mean...
1) did the sender open the Global Address List and double click and then
compose the note?
2) did the sender get user1's address from their contacts folder?
3) did Outlook suggest the name via its nickname cache?

Hi neo:

we had tried to send the mail using the GAL, the Outlook contact and
writting the nickname which appears on ESM.
All of them works when we send a blank mail or when we send it from an
outlook 2000. Is there any special configuration in Outlook 2003 with
Exchange 2000?

Not that I am aware of because Outlook 2003 uses the legacyExchangeDN. This
is the same value used by previous clients. So I guess the 64 dollar
question is what the heck is Outlook 2003 using for this value? You can use
MDBVU32 or OutlookSPY on the problematic workstation to get this value from
one of failed sent messages. Once you are armed with that, you can compare
that with the value stored in Active Directory.

Another idea... is Outlook 2003 running in cached or traditional mode?
(Look in the lower right hand corner of the Outlook window. Connected =
cached mode. Online = Traditional. Offline=No connection. If no words are
there, you are looking at a folder in a PST file.) The reason that I ask is
that if it shows that it is in cached mode, the offline address book (the
*.OAB files) could be whacked. I would close Outlook 2003 and delete the
*.OAB files. This would be enough to force Outlook to download a new copy
of the offline address book. If Exchange is rebuilding this daily like it
should, then this might be enough to solve the problem.
