Need a fix for Word 2003 because it undoes my underline

When I underline a word and the next word is NOT underlined, Word 2003 undoes
my underline on the previous word. Only workaround is to type the next word
without the underline and then GO BACK to the previous word and underline it.
Obviously, a bit inconvenient.

Thanks!

This is not normal. I have no problem turning underline (or any other
formatting) off without affecting previously formatted text.
