Need equation w/ text & include commas anywhere; done this?

A writer friend of mine is working with the equation feature in 2003. He
places text inside curly braces and provides text alternatives within the
braces to the reader. He has experienced problems with Equation editor and
has abandoned using it for the present time. He is using the field code {
EQ...} to perform the same task. {Long explanation coming} He is having
trouble with having a printable comma (the switch is \,) in the first line of
text followed by the next (or subsequent) line of text also having an
instance of the same switch \, ... this condition generates the following
lines of text (2nd, 3rd, ..) beginning far left of the left margin & before
the curly brace (where it should begin).
When using equation editor, this feature is not replicated if you apply a
text style to the highlighted text portion & edit the equation.
So, the friend needs to know how to make the equation editor stable or learn
how switches work (or not) in the field code for equations.
Thanks in advance and behalf of my friend.

Well I'm not sure what you mean by "this feature is not replicated". I'm
also unsure what you mean by making "the equation editor stable". You said
your friend had "experienced problems with Equation editor", but you didn't
say what the problems were. I'll help if I can, but I need more information.
What you're describing that your friend wants to do is easily done in
Equation Editor. Perhaps he's just going about it in the wrong way.

My friend might not be using equation editor correctly, but I'm no judge of
that.
When my friend has used the equation editor for text & he includes commas,
then the feature (loosely used) does not occur as it did when he was using
only the field code { EQ ...}. The text being outside the curly brace does
not occur with equation editor {that is a good thing}. However, he has
another problem (sometimes) with the results with text in the equation
editor. Particularly, the text appears on the screen with letters
superimposed on top of others...looks jumbled together horizontally...and is
not related to having commas inserted in the text.
Yesterday, I saved an example to a file. Today when I look at it again to
attempt to describe what I see, then I found it was corrected after opening
the equation editor and going back to the document (it flickered something by
really fast before it settled down to dispaly the text properly ... so it can
be read).
Thank you for asking for more information.

Could you send me the file privately?

Also, I'm still not understanding what the problem is. Can you explain it in
more detail? It sounds to me like one of your friend's fonts is either
corrupted or missing. Do you see the same problems when you open your
friend's file on your computer?

(Would it be possible for your friend to post directly so I could ask him or
her these questions? I'm glad to help, but sometimes it's difficult when
working through a third party.)
