Need fix for Initializing Places never completes and locks office

I just installed Office 2007. Whenever i try to open a file or use "Save As"
a dialogue box pops up saying "Initializing Places" and it runs and runs but
doesn't stop. it locks me out of whatever app I am in (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, etc.).

Any idea how to fix this?
