removing all headers and footers

I have a large file (book manuscript) from my publisher, that I need to
extensively revise. It has a very large number (300-plus) of styles and
formatting sets (fonts, spacing, etc) when I go to the style pane, with track
formatting clicked. So have "CM" styles with a + font or other formatting..

I need to get rid of all of these and change them to a simple "normal"
paragraph style, with Times Roman font and single spaced, and hopefully leave
the heading and note styles as is. But get rid of all the other styles and
formatting, which shift as I revise and create a very messy mss. Is there a
way to do a simple macro to get rid of all these styles and formatting?

You can remove direct formatting from text by selecting it and then pressing
Ctrl+Q (clears paragraph formatting not in style) as well as Ctrl+SpaceBar
(clears font formatting not in style).

To apply Normal style to the selected paragraphs, just press Ctrl+Shift+N.

Note also that you can use Find and Replace to replace a style with the
Normal style.
