Need help associating Heading Style with TOC Style

I am trying to get a native MS Word Heading 7 style to associate with TOC 1.
If I try to do this via Insert > Reference > Index & Tables > Options, then
type a "1" (for TOC 1) at the Heading 7 field, then re-build the TOC, the
Heading 7 items do NOT appear in the TOC. Upon re-building, when I look at
the TOC Options dialog box, my "1" has disappeared from Heading 7.

Next plan: maybe change the Level in the Heading 7 style?? I changed the
level to Level 1, then re-built the TOC, to no avail.

I don't believe you can change the outline level of any of the built-in
heading styles, so I don't imagine you have actually accomplished this in
the style, but you should be able to do it in TOC Options. The trick is to
look at your TOC field (Alt+F9). If you didn't change anything else in the
dialog, it should show:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u \t "Heading 7,1" }

Thanks for your response.

Yes, that I could change the Level was odd: for some reason, the Level (via
Paragraph) is not grayed out for the Heading 7 style (however, it is when I
create a new doc and muck around in it).

I have gotten it to work: in the Index & Tables dialog box, I changed Show
Levels to 7, then, in Options, de-selected the Outline Levels check-box, and
de-selected those Levels I do not need (3-6), then changed Heading 7's level
to 1. It worked.

It's a clunky way to add numbered appendices to a TOC!

I think there must have been some damage in the document in question because
ordinarily this does work the way it's supposed to.
