need help setting up template

I am trying to set up a template for a sales contract. The problem I
am having concerns lines that I want to have in the contract. I want
to be able to put lines in the contract that I can go back later and
type the information on without the lines reformatting or the entire
contract reformatting. Does this make sense? How can I accomplish
this in Word? Thanks.

There's about a hundred different solutions to this question, depending on
which suits your purpose :)

IO suggest you try with one-cell tables. Use Insert>Table to insert a table
of One row and one column.

Use Table>Properties to ensure that it is set "inline with text". Then drag
the right-hand border to set a fixed width. Finally, use Format>Borders and
shading to turn the borders off so they do not print.

Now copy that and paste a copy wherever you want. When you type in the cell
later, nothing will change unless you type so much the cell expands to a
second line. If it does, Word will simply shove the rest of the document
down the page to accommodate it.

There are other far more complex methods that will produce more exact
results. Get back to us if you know a little computer coding and you think
you need them. But that one is the simplest and quickest.

Cheers
