Need help to convert word file from backup disk

I backed up some word files and excel files to disk. When I tried to open
the word files (.doc) my system said it couldn't read without converting. I
allowed it to do its conversion and when the document opened it only contains
funny characters..
How can I re-convert or do I have damaged files? The excel files restore
fine.
