Need help to insert Excel table in Word document

Specifics, new laptop, OS XP, Office XP SP-2, McAfee corporate version

I cannot create a excel table in a word document the error message I
get is

"Ms Word can't start the application required to open this object. An
error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly.
Would you like to repair this feature now - YES or NO"

On clicking yes, the computer gives the following message:
"Installing components for Ms Word"

After installation it gives the following message:

"This object was created in Excel. This application is not available
to open this object. Make sure the application is properly installed
and that, it has not been deleted or removed"

It seems to be a known problem with Norton Antivirus, does anyone know
if there is a similar problem with MAfee

No would have been too easy, MS Excel is installed on my laptop.
