Need help with Access 97 and Oracle 9i

Hello all,

I've got a FE/BE application, and I'd like to change the BE to linked
tables. These table are in an Oracle database. I'm working on testing this
change and I'm stuck. I'm hoping someone can help, or at least get me
pointed in the right direction. Google has failed me (likely due to user
error).

I'm using Access 97 (and have to continue to do so, so no upgrade
recommendations). The backend sits on a server, and all the FEs point to
that location. I'd like to change the existing tables in the BE to linked
tables. The switch BE versions with (hopefully) to effect on the user.

I'm connecting to Oracle 9i. I've attempted to create an ODBC connection,
but it's constantly fails. And nothing I've done has solved the issue.
After a bit of googling, I found that the Microsoft ODBC Driver doesn't
support anything beyond Oracle 8i (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244661).
The recommended solution in that DB article is a .NET solution. I can't see
how that could work with Access 97, so I believe I need a different solution.

I don't have any administrative control over the Oracle DB, so I have (to
try) to get this working through Access 97, if possible. I haven't been able
to find an ODBC driver for use in Access 97 for Oracle 9i. That might solve
my whole issue.

I'm looking for anything I can get; suggestions, recommendations, required
reading, criticism. Appreciate everyone's response.

If anyone has any sites they would recommend covering ODBC related
information, please pass them on.

I'm not sure I understand. It sounds like you want the B-E to link to
Oracle data. Why?

Why not just link directly from the F-Ends to the Oracle data?

I just did a quick 'google' on MS Access 97 ODBC Oracle 9i and found several
links that seemed to offer assistance. One of the points mentioned the
service pack ... which one do you have installed on your Access '97?

Jeff,

Currently, the FE links to tables in the BE. If I change the FE to link
directly to Oracle, then I have to recreate the mde and then push it out to
all the users. It seems less problematic to simply change the BE and leave
the FE untouched.

Not sure if our google results were the same. A large number of my results
discussed using ODBC driver to connect to Oracle. My issue is the one I have
on my machine, Microsoft ODBC for Oracle (2.575.1132.00), doesn't seem to
work with Oracle 9i. As I mentioned, this could be an error on my part. I
just don't know what the error is.

Access 97 is at SR-2, XP is at SP3.

I can't ignore the fact that it might be an issue unrelated to the driver.
It just seemed to be the most likely cause. Further investigation may prove
me wrong.

"Where" are you trying to do this? If you do link from your B-E db, THAT
machine will have to have the ODBC drivers to connect.

(I offer this in case you were trying to make the connection from your F-E
copy.)

Jeff,

I'm trying to make the connection on the my local (development) machine.
Once I get that working, then I'll look into getting it working at alternate
locations.

Thanks for the tip though. It's something I'll definitely need to consider.
