Need help with terminology

J

JoAnn Amerson

I truly want to look up my answer but I don't know the correct terminology.

I am getting ready to start my first "from scratch" website. The domain name
is set up, the contract with the web host has been signed, I have the user
name and password. What I don't have is *where* to put my files.

I maintain a separate site but it was already up and running by the time I
took over. Now I have a clean slate but don't know what to type into a
search engine or look up in a book. Somewhere there has to be the steps I
need to take to access the web host's servers. I *think* I need an IP
address - am I wrong?

Is there a kind soul out there who would be willing to help me with my
search?

It's been more than 72 hours though.

For a new domain name, it may take up to 72 hours to be added to all the DNS
servers worldwide.

Hi JoAnn,

First thing you need to do is to contact your hosting service and ask them
what your IP address is. Since a Domain Name is translated to an IP address,
of course, just using the IP address will always work. For example, when
opening the remote web, you would type in "http://123.456.789.000" (not a
real IP address). Next, you can try pinging your domain name to see when
your local DNS server picks it up. You do this by opening a Command Prompt
and typing in "ping yourDomainName.com" (use your real Domain Name). If the
domain name is resolved, it will return your domain's IP address. In the
meantime, though, you should be able to get into your web site with the IP
address.

All versions of FP allow you to publish to the web host if FP server
extensions are installed.

| It depends on what version of frontpage you are using, but
| the 2002 version allows you to publish your web straight
| to the site. All you need is your Username and Password
| from your ISP. Type in your web address, then your all
| good. However, if you are using an older version of
| FrontPage then I beleive you need a FTP (File Transfer
| Protocol) program that will transfer your files. Do not
| quote me on this, because I am not familiar with the older
| FrontPage program.
|
| Hope this helps.

Okie dokie - Looks like I need to make a phone call on Monday. :)

Thank you everyone for the help. It was nice to learn that I was doing
something the correct way and that the error isn't on my end.
