NEED HELP

How can I get the tool bar of my microsoft word office 2003 not to be gray? I
am trying to use the header and footer option but almost all the icons on my
tool bar are gray. I downloaded the trial of microsoft word office 2003. Is
this why it won't work? Can anyone please help me?

Maybe the trial version is past its "use by date"
