Need O97PRO on XP.

Just a while ago I switched to cable internet. My
computer (OS-W98 w/O97Pro-CD) was so slow that I went and
bought a new computer (OS-XPH) and sold my junker for
parts. I did the trial of Office2003 and loved it. But
now the trial is over and it sucks. So I want to put my
Office97Pro on my new XP so I can still get around with
my work, but when I run the CD it sais: 16BIT WINDOWS
SUBSYSTEM: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system
file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS WINDOW
Apps. Choose close. So how do I get it on my PC? It
would really suck to pay that much money for a great
program and then by a year not ever be able to use it
again. Please help?

Matt,
I hope someone gives you an answer. I have the same situation with
different but similar error msgs. 'can't run 16-bit windows program' and
then I sometimes get an 'insufficient memory' error. I am lost and need to
at least get Exel on this XP box. Good luck.

Office 97 should install flawlessly on XP. Perhaps it's becuase you
have a previously installed version of a later version of Office that is
confusing it. Remove the Office 2003 trial *completely* and then try again.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Speaking for myself, I have two new pc's with brand spanking new installs of
XP Home and nothing else. I get these errors on both units.

Sorry. Inexplicable, I guess. Office 97 should install just fine.
Maybe the files on the CD are corrupt or something or otherwise not
reading the data correctly.

Thanks for reply. It was what I didn't want to hear! I was hoping you
would say: "No problem, here is what you need to do...." Oh, well, it's
just money and I can't take it with me, so they say.

Under msconfig, Services Tab - hide MS services, disable all others
In startup, disable all.
After reboot try the install again.
May help, certainly did for me, with similar problems. I later discovered it
was caused by a specific background app, for some totally inexplicable
reason.

See DL's reply. Also, turn off any anti-virus programs you have
running. Something other than Office or XP is probably causing this.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
