Need Office Skills Assessments for staff (preferably free)

I am the IT Director of a small non-profit organization which has a
desperate need for staff training on office products. I have been given the
authority to send staff to training, but sadly convincing them has been
difficult. No one wants to admit that they are sub-par on some
applications. I am hoping to find some sort of online or downloadable
skills assessment so that i can identify the areas of need, without it being
a "personal" issue (i.e. it doesnt' come from me). As we are a small
non-profit, cost is an issue. Low cost or free preferred.

Anyone have any ideas?

for online training courses. Any user can benefit from this feature of the
Office Online site. It will be very hard to find "free" off site training
for Office. You can goggle search for training courses in your area, or
check with a local Jr College for continuing education courses.

We actually have training paid for, its the skills assessment that I am
having trouble with.

You mean like a pre-test? There is one on-line training that offers
pre-assessment tests, and then offers to only cover those areas where the
person is lacking. It is a package that costs $40 per person per year (but
that was for my organization which has +15,000 employees) - don't know what
your budget is like but it worked for my agency.

Child--

The MSFT Office site Milly referenced for skills assessment is

http://www.microsoft.com/learning/assessment/default.asp

I don't think you're going to find the type skills assessment you seem to
want for free. As to low cost for your non-profit you might check out the
Office books at

http://www.course.com/

http://www.course.com/office/

You can probably set up an on line assessment account. The books are full
of self assessments at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels--are
well done and fairly completel. There may be a way you can set up web
assessment. But it's not going to be free and their books average $60-80.
They differ from a lot of other excellent Office books out there in their
colored illustration format and quizzes. I don't know the size of your
non-profit but volume probably garners discount.

Your local certified Microsoft training provider should have these
available for you. If not, maybe you should find one that does. If
you are on the East coast, try Computer Education Services Corp. They
provide them to their clients. They offer all kinds of solutions for
companies trying to train a large staff. Hope that helps.
